Meet Olly: Youth Soccer Trainer

I'm Oliver Sovenyhazy, but most people call me Olly. I'm 16, I play for Surf, I volunteer with the Charleston Battery, and I train younger players around Mount Pleasant and Charleston.

My story

Growing up on the ball

Soccer has been my thing for as long as I can remember. I came up through Charleston Soccer Club, where I played until I was 14, and today I play for Surf. Training and competing every week has taught me how much the small details matter: the first touch, the scan before the ball arrives, the extra rep when nobody’s watching.

I started Olly On The Ball because I love helping younger players get better. Seeing a kid finally nail a move they’ve been working on for weeks is the best part of my day.

My own goal is to play professionally. Every session I coach keeps me sharp too, because explaining something well means you really have to understand it.

Learning from the pros

What the Charleston Battery taught me

Volunteering with the Charleston Battery puts me around a professional environment, and the biggest thing I’ve noticed is how much the pros obsess over the basics. Passing, first touch and movement, done fast and done every single day.

The other thing is speed of play. The ball barely stops, and decisions happen before it even arrives. So I train younger players to check their shoulder, decide early and move the ball quickly, not just cleanly.

What drives me

Train hard. Play free.

My motto is simple: train hard, play with passion and always stay on the ball.

Fun first

The best way to learn is by having fun. Kids who enjoy training come back hungry for more.

Hard work

Real development comes from reps and consistency, not shortcuts. I bring intensity to every session.

Kindness

I lead with kindness on and off the field. Respect and encouragement make players braver.

Growth

Learn from mistakes and never give up. Every session is a chance to get a little better.
